Former Tempe police officer gets 90 days, probation in theft case Associated Press Fri Jun 7, 2013 2:27 PM A former Tempe police officer has been sentenced to 90 days in jail and three years’ probation for stealing police property and cash. Aaron Smith was sentenced Friday after pleading guilty to one count of theft, Maricopa County prosecutors sai. Smith was arrested in July after a month-long internal investigation on suspicion of theft, burglary and tampering with physical evidence. Police said they began to get reports of missing items in early July. Investigators said Smith had access to the areas where the property disappeared and his swing-shift hours matched up with when the items went missing. Detectives found two stolen police bicycles when they served search warrants at Smith’s home, vehicles and work locker. Smith had been with Tempe police for 7½ years and resigned after his arrest. |
